In the Setting Sun series, I move further into an intuitive and material-led way of working, allowing form, colour, and surface to guide the painting. Hessian plays an important role in this process, as its absorbent surface changes the behaviour of the oil paint, creating softer and more fluid transitions while still holding depth, richness, and layered colour. Curved forms appear to emerge and dissolve across the surface, suggesting fragments of landscape, growth, and movement rather than a fixed image of the sun. Through rhythm, structure, and atmosphere, the sun is implied rather than shown directly. The series continues my exploration of colour as a source of energy, emotion, and visual balance.
